De Beers / The Diamond Cartel
Supply-Managed Reality, Productised
The working prototype of fake value. Cecil Rhodes amalgamated the Kimberley fields into De Beers Consolidated Mines in 1888 — financed by N M Rothschild & Sons and Alfred Beit. The 1889 Diamond Syndicate, later the Central Selling Organisation, controlled ~80-90% of the world's rough diamonds for most of the 20th century.
Diamonds aren't scarce, so the scarcity was manufactured. De Beers hired N.W. Ayer in 1938; copywriter Frances Gerety wrote 'A Diamond Is Forever' in 1947. Supply restricted by one hand, demand engineered by advertising — a century-tested, profitable model of staged value. Reality-management isn't only a political theory; here it's a balance sheet.
