Mells Park & the Managed Handover

A Mining House Brokered the Exit

Between 1987 and 1990 Michael Young of Consolidated Gold Fields (a company Rhodes co-founded in 1887) ran secret talks at Mells Park, Somerset — bringing Thabo Mbeki together with Afrikaner intermediaries linked to apartheid intelligence. The motive was explicit: keep the gold house in South Africa 'for the long haul.'
The settlement preserved the capital structure: the Freedom Charter's nationalisation clause went unimplemented; CODESA produced sunset clauses and entrenched Reserve Bank independence. Structural, not a puppet show — the engine names no puppet.
